Speed Drinking

You may have heard that competitive eating is a sport (as much as car racing, bowling or skeet shooting are sports at least). But what about speed drinking? Never heard of it? It’s all about trying to drink the most amount of water (or beer) in the shortest possible time.

Anyway, here’s a cool video of a Japanese speed drinker who attempts to drink 1.5 liters of water in under 5 seconds.

And for good measure, this one is a 2-liter Coke speed drinking contest for pimply, geeky teenage boys. (Careful, there’s puking in this one.)

Stupified, I had to learn more. In Wikipedia, I found mention of speed drinking with beer rather than water. Oddly, the object of speed drinking (or competitive drinking) is not to get drunk since they usually let their beer go flat and warm so they can down it quickly. Er, warm beer is gross.

Although the dude in the video had great style, he’s not as fast as some record holders listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. Imagine: 2 liters in 6 seconds. Or 1 liter in 1.3 seconds!

Unfortunately, world records for this category have been eliminated due to its extreme danger. But I think I hear the Olympic committee calling for 2012.
