Having the power to give a singing career to someone who is a good singer is not such a big deal. But making a star out of someone who doesn’t really deserve it is so much more satisfying.

That’s why the movement to make Sanjaya Malakar the next American Idol is so compelling. The stir created by the “corruption” of the sanctity of the Idol vote is hysterical. What could be more American than a sketchy election giving the job to a guy who doesn’t actually deserve it?

Sanjay rocked it tonight with his rendition of Besame Mucho. It was very weird, but strangely spellbinding. His beard was cool. He lears at the camera in a creepy way.
